Yeah, I guess they couldn’t find the time amidst all the African dancing, African clothing and rehash of some of the Civil Rights movement.
At least they haven’t found a way to exclude Martin Luther King, Jr, although they have conveniently scrubbed “Rev,” ignoring the fact the he was a MINISTER OF THE GOSPEL FIRST, oh, and a Republican, as well.
Pretty limited history they present. One year, for a few months, I home tutored a girl who was switching districts and her mom didn’t want to enroll her in the public school so late. In February she asked me if we were going to have Black History Month. I replied, with surprise, that is seemed strange to SEGREGATE their history, and to the shortest month of the year, at that. Nevertheless, in the interests of education we would do a project.
So for the month we read really cool Newberry Award Medal books about real blacks early in our history, we worked on memorizing ALL of the countries in Africa, we learned about MLK and other people who made a difference and who are also associated with our area (Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth & Frederick Douglass, both Republicans), and others.
She didn’t know about George Washington Carver, Alan Keys, Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, Clarence Thomas, or other well-known black Americans (coincidentally? all Republican). My comment was “Goodness, girl! What DO they teach you in Black History month?”

I hope it stuck, but since she is not getting into the kind of trouble like the rest of the kids on the street (she and her mom live a few houses down), I guess a seed was planted and may be sprouting.
