Genealogy is another of my many hobbies. The 1940 census has been digitized and is being made available online. The above is the OFFICIAL government site (and FREE); other sites will try to charge you for this.
There is a video on the page that explains what they have done and how to find the information you seek. Since I have not used it yet I have no opinion, but I plan to use it later.
