Malaysian Airline MH370 – chronology of the investigation

In this world of quick news turnover (here in the US, anyway), often stories become reduced to rehashing of the same original information, but with more details removed to make space for newer stories. So here are a series of links to  articles following developments in the case of the lost Boeing 777, Malaysian Airlines flight MH370.

(Reformatted to be read with most recent info at the top.) Latest update:

The most plausible theory/explanation of what happened to the flight, written by a pilot.

March 18, 2014 – “A Startlingly Simple Theory About the Missing Malaysia Airlines Jet” – http://www.wired.com/2014/03/mh370-electrical-fire/

“There has been a lot of speculation about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Terrorism, hijacking, meteors. I cannot believe the analysis on CNN; it’s almost disturbing. I tend to look for a simpler explanation, and I find it with the 13,000-foot runway at Pulau Langkawi….” (follow link for the full article)

March 31 – “Flight 370 Passenger Philip Wood Allegedly Sends Message from U.S. Military Base in Indian Ocean” – I don’t know what to think of this, and apparently neither does the writer, but for what it’s worth, here it is. He says:

“There are rumblings that the passengers of Malaysian Flight 370 may be alive and incarcerated at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. If this proves to be true, then a likely scenario is that this was a false flag pulled off by the U.S. Government.

Please keep in mind that there are those out there who create conspiracy theories and accompanying evidence as a hobby. With modern technology, it is getting easier and easier to do. This may or may not be one of those times.”

March 17, 2014 (AU) Another plane like Malaysia Airlines flight 370 vanished with GPS tracking

http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/another-plane-like-malaysia-airlines-flight-370-vanished-with-gps-tracking/story-fnizu68q-1226856947629

Summary: In 2003 at Luanda airstrip, Angola, an American engineer Ben Charles Padilla and his new Congolese assistant John Mikel Mutantu, boarded the Boeing 727. It had the tail number 844AA. Neither engineer had a commercial pilot’s license or permission to be in the cockpit — yet suddenly the 153-foot plane taxied to the runway and took off. Just before its sunset takeoff, the aircraft’s headlights and transponders were switched off. It was never seen again.

March 16,2014 “Malaysian plane mystery copies comic story of hijacked jet which landed on remote island”

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/370076/Malaysian-plane-mystery-copies-comic-story-of-hijacked-jet-which-landed-on-remote-island

Excerpts: “The amazing theory was revealed as police confiscated a flight simulator from one of the pilots’ homes… It is feared he may have practised hijacking the plane… MH370 was on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it vanished – the same part of the world depicted in Belgian cartoonist Herge’s story [Tin Tin]… An al Qaida supergrass told a court last week that four to five men from the country were planning to take control of an aircraft, using a bomb hidden in a shoe to open the cockpit door. Security experts said the evidence, from a convicted Brit terrorist, was ‘credible’.”

March 17, 2014 (AU) “Missing Malaysia Airlines jet may have flown under radar: investigators”

http://www.smh.com.au/world/missing-malaysia-airlines-jet-may-have-flown-under-radar-investigators-20140317-hvjlf.html

Excerpts: Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 dropped to altitudes as low as 1524 metres (5000 feet) using a dangerous flying technique called “terrain masking” to avoid radar in at least three countries, investigators believe… Authorities…have appealed for countries to deploy more ships and planes to a vast expanse of water in the Indian Ocean west of Australia, where there is no land mass for thousands of square kilometres… But it is understood investigators say it is more likely the plane is in the northern corridor where there are unstable governments, mountainous terrain and extremist groups…. Malaysia has asked countries to make data on their satellites available to assist the search but some have not because of sensitivities sharing information that involves national security… After a week of false leads, misinformation and confusion around one of the world’s most baffling aviation mysteries, authorities in Kuala Lumpur have calculated from Immarsat satellite data the plane sent out six “pings,” which are also known as electronic handshakes, after its communications equipment was deliberately disabled by some-one on board. The seventh ping never came, indicating the plane either landed and the engine was shut off or it crashed.”

March 16, 2014  “Is this proof that missing Malaysia Airlines flight WAS ‘hijacked’ by one of its pilots? Final words from MH370 were spoken after its communication equipment was disabled – and the pilot sounded calm”

  • Footage captures Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah being frisked by security
  • He is followed by co-pilot Fariq Hamid who was also searched
  • Shah ‘fanatical’ supporter of the country’s opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim
  • Pilot’s wife and three children moved out of family home the day before plane went missing

Following graphic shows how situation might have developed:

MY COMMENTS: Daily Mail always has many pictures and videos. Worth following the link just to see all they have.

Writer says in article: “After a missing half hour [after the ACARS system was shut down.], someone in the cockpit spoke to air traffic controllers for the final time, saying: ‘All right. Good night.’ The usual sign-off would have been ‘Roger and out’…” He suggests this was an attempt to mislead ground control. Could be… I think another conceivable reason could be that it was either the pilot or co-pilot saying the wrong thing in hopes someone would notice and scramble help. What do you think?

Fri March 14, 2014, 5:23 PM EDT - “CNN Exclusive: Analysis shows 2nd possible Indian Ocean path for Malaysia airliner” NEW INFORMATION. This also has a video showing a map of where the plane might have gone. Excerpts: ‘An aviation industry source tells CNN that the flight’s automated communications system appeared to be intact for up to five hours, because pings from the system were received after the transponder last emitted a signal. Taken together, the data point toward speculation in a dark scenario in which someone took the plane for some unknown purpose, perhaps terrorism. Aviation experts say it’s possible, if highly unlikely, that someone could have hijacked and landed the giant Boeing 777 undetected. The international airport in Port Blair, the regional capital of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, has a runway that is long enough to accommodate a 777, according to publicly available data.’
